Immunomodulatory effects of medicinal leech saliva extract on in vitro activated macrophages
Immunologic research, 73(1):9, 2025Leech therapy has been utilized in modern and traditional medicine. Leech saliva contains versatile peptides and molecules that can exert anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulant, and analgesic activities on the patients. The active components and molecular mechanism of action of these components should be deciphered properly in order to generate biotechnological drug candidates by recombinant production of the leech saliva peptides. In our study, we conducted LC–MS/MS and proteomics analysis on the lyophilized leech saliva extract to determine the components of it. Moreover, this extract was tested on the in vitro-activated macrophages. The extract decreased the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines by the activated mammalian macrophages compared to the positive control groups. These results suggest that the lyophilized leech saliva can be utilized as an anti-inflammatory…

Evaluation of the temporomandibular joint morphology and condylar position with cone-beam computerized tomography in patients with internal derangement
Oral Radiology, 39(1):173-179, 2023ObjectivesTo evaluate the relationship between internal derangement and morphological features of the temporomandibular joint by comparing joint morphology between patients with ID and control patients.MethodsThe current study prospectively is evaluated the cone-beam computed images of 106 ID patients and 122 patients with asymptomatic joints; recorded angular and linear measurements. The relationships between these measurements and ID are investigated; the differences between the two groups using paired t tests.ResultsThere were significant differences in the values of articular slope and the condyle height/glenoid fossa depth (CH/GFD) ratio between patients in the ID and control groups (p < 0.05). There was also a relationship between these parameters and the gender of patients with ID. The condylar position was posterior in the ID group.ConclusionPosteriorly and superiorly located…

Three-dimensional evaluation of upper airway changes after bimaxillary surgery of skeletal Class 3 patients
Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 34(3):996-1000, 2023The aim of this study was to evaluate the 3-dimensional changes in upper airway space of class 3 patients after surgery with sleep-related breathing disturbance. This is a retrospective cohort study included 25 patients who had undergone bimaxillary orthognathic surgery with maxillary advancement and mandibular setback for skeletal class 3 deformity. The changes in minimum axial area, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal airway volume were determined by cone-beam computed tomography images, as well as the sleep parameters by polysomnography preoperatively and postoperatively. The impacts of mandibular setback and maxillary advancement amounts on the airway structures were evaluated and compared with other parameters. The results show that pharyngeal volume measurement means were found to be significantly increased postoperatively (P< 0.05). No significant difference was observed in…

Relationship of NLRP3 Inflammasome with Oral health
Current Oral Health Reports, 10(4):196-202, 2023Purpose of ReviewThe aim of this review is whether the NLRP3 inflammasome is associated with oral health and to understand whether the biology of the NLRP3 inflammasome is for the prevention of oral inflammatory and immunological disorders.Recent FindingsAccording to the studies, understanding the biology of the NLRP3 inflammasome is essential for the treatment and prevention of oral inflammatory and immunological disorders. It has been observed that the pathways of chronic inflammatory diseases are similar both in oral and systemic diseases. Recent investigations have demonstrated that inflammasomes play important roles in osteogenesis and bone homeostasis. Other findings showed that NLRP3 controls osteoclast differentiation to control bone resorption in periodontitis. Recent research has shown that the immune response of the host is restricted by this controlled antigen-specific T-cell…

Isotretinoin Beyond the Skin: A Prospective Study on Its Impact on Periodontal Health
Dermatology Practical & Conceptual, 16(2):6739, 2026Background Isotretinoin is a systemic retinoid widely used for the treatment of severe acne vulgaris. While its dermatologic side effects are well known, its potential impact on periodontal health has not been fully elucidated. Objective This prospective study aimed to evaluate the effects of systemic isotretinoin therapy on clinical periodontal parameters in young adults treated for acne vulgaris. Methods A total of 80 patients (59 females and 21 males), aged between 18 and 25 years, undergoing systemic isotretinoin therapy (0.5 mg/kg/day for months 0–3 and 0.7 mg/kg/day for months 4–6) for a duration of six months, were included in the study. Clinical periodontal assessments, including bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque index (PI), and probing depth (PD), were performed at baseline and after six months. Patients with systemic conditions, recent dental treatments or antibiotic use, and other potential confounding…

Evaluation of dental practitioners’ knowledge and attitudes regarding drug interactions: a cross-sectional survey
BMC Oral Health, 2026ObjectivesIn dentistry, various medications are commonly used to manage conditions and maintain patient comfort. The use of multiple medications at the same time, known as polypharmacy, often occurs to manage multiple conditions. Drug interactions in dentistry present considerable risks but reveal gaps in dentists’ knowledge. Recognizing drug interaction prevalence is essential for better prescribing and patient outcomes. This investigation aims to evaluate dentists’ comprehension of pharmaceutical interactions, clarify common misconceptions, and examine the impact of years of professional experience, specialty/doctoral training, and dental specialty field, and analyze the factors influencing dental professionals’ prescribing behaviors.MethodsThis study engaged 217 dental practitioners (dental interns and post-graduate dentists) from diverse specialties in Turkey. Participants completed a 23-question survey…

Concurrent Presentation of Odontogenic Keratocyst and Fibro-Osseous Lesion in the Maxilla: A Case Report and Review
International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 54:101, 2025Discussion: While coronectomy is frequently used to manage mandibular third molars near the IAN, its application in the interforaminal zone is less common. This case highlights the risks associated with even minor variations in the incisive nerve’s anatomy. Resorption of the LR3, associated with prolonged impaction, required careful evaluation with Cone Beam CT imaging. The treatment plan balanced preserving nerve integrity and addressing resorption, reflecting a tailored approach. Conclusion: This case underscores the importance of precise imaging and individualized treatment in managing impacted teeth with rare anatomical anomalies. Further research is needed to establish specific guidelines for such cases. https://doi. org/10.1016/j. ijom. 2025.04. 282

Sinüs Augmentasyon İşlemlerinde Kullanılan Greft Materyalleri
Turkiye Klinikleri Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery-Special Topics, 7(1):72-78, 2021Dental implantlar, dişsizliğe bağlı kaybedilmiş fonksiyonun, fonasyonun ve estetiğin yeniden kazandırılmasında güncel tedavi yaklaşımı olarak sıklıkla tercih edilmektedir. Dişsiz sonlanmış ya da kısmi dişsiz posterior maksillada, dental implantların yerleştirilmesi için kemik yüksekliği, diş çekimi sonrası kemik rezorbsiyonu, travma, patolojik etkenlerle birlikte veya tek başına diş kayıplarına bağlı maksiller sinüs pnömatizasyonu sebebiyle bazı hasta gruplarında yetersiz kalmaktadır. Sinüs lift cerrahisi beraberinde kemik greftleri ile augmentasyon işlemiyle, kaybedilen kemik yüksekliğinin kazanılması amaçlanmaktadır. Bu bölümde, sinüs augmentasyonunda sıklıkla kullanılan greft materyallerinin tanımlanması amaçlanmıştır.
